Luxury wedding styling isn’t just about polishing the hair, it’s about precision planning. The best hair artists make it look effortless because every detail was quietly handled weeks in advance. Being a celebrity stylist and one of fifteen children I have been the hairstylist for many weddings some with over a million dollar budget and some with a more modest budget, however, I treat all weddings the same. It is 100% about the attention to details and it is all about the details.
Here is my checklist:
THREE MONTHS BEFORE
Consult & Concept:
Meet with the bride to define the overall vision. What is the dress neckline, the venue mood, and how the hair should move under lighting and weather.
Trial Scheduling:
Book both a trial and camera test. Capture the look in natural light and indoor flash to ensure tones and textures read beautifully on film.
Extensions & Wig Planning:
Source, color-match, or custom-create any luxury extension pieces or wigs. Begin prepping them for density, shine, and secure fit.
Hair Health Plan:
Recommend a conditioning or glossing treatment series to boost strength and radiance before styling begins.
ONE MONTH BEFORE
Finalize Style Selection:
Confirm the final silhouette of the structured updo, modern half-up, or soft waves. Confirm accessories (veil, pins, headbands) with gown fittings.
Coordination Meeting:
Sync with the planner, makeup artist, and photographer to build a shared day-of schedule.
Trial Refinement:
Rehearse any transitions will multiple styles be needed will the veil need removal, accessory swap, or evening hair change.
ONE WEEK BEFORE
Hair Prep Appointments:
Perform any necessary root touch-ups, gloss, trim, or smoothing treatment.
Confirm Logistics:
Double-check on-site setup of lighting, outlets, seating, mirrors, backup tools, and touch-up area.
Emergency Hair Kit Ready:
Assemble: hairspray, pins, combs, dry shampoo, shine spray, blotting papers, and wig adhesive for quick corrections. I always have additional mints, mini scissors and some fashion tape.
DAY OF
Create a Calm Start:
Begin early, set a zen tone. Background music, organized tools, and staggered appointments to prevent chaos.
Order of Styling:
Style the bride second to last after photography touch ups begin but before final gown dressing.
Touch-Up Station:
Stay on-site for pre-ceremony and post-portrait refresh. Offer a secondary “reveal” look for the reception if desired.
Final Checks:
Ensure no flyaways, seamless veil transitions, and weatherproof hold before hand-off to the planner or assistant. I will usually stand by and do any last minute adjustments before they walk down the aisle. I will also stand by for hair touch ups for the photos before and after the ceremony.
