Debunking Common Baldness Myths

By Myths

There’s a lot of online chatter surrounding baldness these days which can be quite confusing and misleading if hair isn’t your profession. Never fear, it’s Dean Banowetz Hollywood Hair Guy® to the rescue to provide you with expert insights, let’s discuss:

Common Baldness Questions

Is it true that baldness is linked to higher fertility? Why/why not?

Not really, that myth came from the fact that baldness is tied to testosterone. People automatically assume more hormones equals more fertility that’s not how it is. Baldness happens because of how your body responds to DHT, which is a by-product of testosterone. Not because someone has more testosterone. So baldness does not mean you’re more fertile, it means you are sensitive to that specific hormone.

Is it true that men only inherit baldness from their mother’s side? Why/why not?

That is a half truth obviously we inherit traits from both of our parents. If your mother’s father is bald, it might increase your chances if your father or uncles are bald that of course matters just as much.

Frequent Baldness Myths

Myth 1: Wearing hats won’t cause baldness.
Fact: Your hair gets its nutrients from oxygen rich blood not the air.

Myth 2: Cutting your hair doesn’t make it grow back thicker.
Fact: It feels thicker because the ends are blunt from the cut. The density of the hair doesn’t change from a cut unless, it is thinned out.

Myth 3: Baldness doesn’t mean you are less healthy.
Fact: There’re many perfectly healthy people who lose hair. Hair loss is mostly genetic and hormone sensitivity not someone’s overall health.

Myth 4: Stress by itself doesn’t make you go bald.
Fact: Extreme stress can cause a temporary loss of hair, but it doesn’t cause permanent baldness.

Myth 5: There’s nothing you can do about baldness.
Fact: This is false. Treatments like minoxidil, finasteride, laser therapy, and hair restoration are options that can slow down hair loss and reverse loss for many.

Additional Considerations & Tips

Should you wash your bald head every day?

You should shampoo your head every day, using a gentle cleaner. Even without hair, your scalp still produces oil and sweat that can easily build up on your scalp daily. When you shampoo your bald head, it keeps pours clear and helps prevent bumps or shine as well as odor. If your scalp feels dry you can rinse with water and shampoo every other day.

Here are some good ingredients to look for in a shampoo to use on bald heads:

  • Aloe vera helps to calm and rehydrates the skin.
  • Chamomile or oat extract to help with sensitivity use.
  • Tea tree oil helps to fight bacteria and reduce buildup.
  • Glycerin to add light moisture.

I would avoid anything with a strong fragrance. They can dry out your scalp as well as any harsh sulfates. You should moisturize your bald head because a bald head needs moisture just like skin on your face. I would recommend something that is non-greasy, either a lotion or balm after showering to keep your head smooth and healthy. I would also recommend products with shea, butter, hyaluronic acid or jojoba oil for great lasting hydration.

Here’s some simple steps on to take care of your bald head:

  • Cleanse your head daily with a gentle shampoo.
  • Add moisture right after drying.
  • Use sunscreen anything (at least SPF 30 or higher) this protects your skin from sunburn and dark spots.
  • Exfoliate at least once a week with a mild scrub to help prevent flakes and ingrown hairs.
  • Shave or trim your head regularly to keep it smooth and even.
